Nansha Mega Urban Complex Planning and Design Study

In May 2023, PTW was selected as one of three winning programs in the International Competition on the Nansha Mega Urban Complex Planning and Design Study International Competition.

Nansha, belonging to the historically rich city of Guangzhou, possesses abundant cultural resources. Facing the South China Sea, connected to Shenzhen and Hong Kong in the east, and linked with Zhuhai and Macau in the west, it serves as a crucial hub within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The site is bordered to the north by thousands of acres of wetlands and to the south by the boundless sea, with important waterbird ecological corridors and gathering areas surrounding the site, making the construction environment very unique.

The strategy of buildings towards water is “opening up and embracing.” Based on this strategy, when designing the mega urban complex in Nansha, the utilisation of the waterfront is not simply about placing buildings by the water, but considering it as a medium where the city and nature mutually permeate and integrate.

The planning framework respects the current ecological texture, taking the east-west water vein as the horizontal axis and the south-north green vein as the vertical axis to form an “Ecological Cross” structure.

The project site is located at the junction of land and bay, at the southernmost tip of Guangzhou. The main stadium is inspired by the symbiotic relationship between architecture and water, with transparency and purity endowing the building with life. It features a semi-open design facing the sea, creating an open water showcase with the sea as its backdrop.

The waterfront stadium, facing the sea, can host cultural events such as sea music festivals and festive light and water shows, creating a city-level attraction and buzz, providing an attractive stage for the bay area’s waterfront living room.

With an in-depth insight into the global industry development trends, cultural and sports exchanges will play an increasingly important role in future development projects. Large-scale sports complexes of the future will lead the trend by adopting a new operational model of “sports + diversified business integration”, forming a highly detailed and organically unified overall layout. The Nansha Mega Urban Complex aims to create a sports center that not only accommodates international events and large-scale performances but also serves as a precinct for the public to share and enjoy.
