The proposal encompasses three levels, comprising two storeys of commercial spaces and ground floor retail. A majestic flowering Jacaranda tree is the main feature of the back garden, which adds a touch of natural beauty. The lower ground floor along Wilshire Street will host service spaces, a dedicated loading bay, bin storage, and a plant room for the fire pump. On the proposed ground floor, new retail establishments will continue to energize an already bustling Crown Street. A newly recessed lobby, designed in harmony with adjacent heritage structures, creates a small pocket plaza and extends an inviting welcome to visitors. The lobby houses a lift that provides access to the upper-level commercial office, where a connecting three-level atrium bathes the area in natural light, facilitated by a skylight on the roof.
The site’s focal point is a grand Jacaranda tree in the backyard, enveloped by a semi-circular outdoor café and framed by modular arch windows Undoubtedly a symbolic Surry Hills centrepiece, such a scene will make for delightful viewing, particularly during its rejuvenation in spring.
Through meticulous articulation of the new architectural structure while preserving the façade pattern of existing heritage elements, including facade walls and deep-recessed balconies, this Proposal aims to seamlessly integrate a new form of commercial development within Surry Hills.
