‘From Dreams to Rail-ity’ – PTW’s remarkable achievement in the Urban redevelopment Authority of Singapore competition
Context
“Located in Singapore, the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (TPRS) used to operate as the southernmost terminus on the West Coast Rail Line of the Keratapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway. The former railway line has since been transformed into the 24km long Rail Corridor.
While it has ceased operations, the TPRS has been gazetted as a National Monument and remains the key southern gateway into the Rail Corridor and point of entry to the Central Business District and future Greater Southern Waterfront.”
The concept of a “0km hub” alludes to the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station as a starting point where different spatial identities converge, referencing the start of the 24km Rail Corridor as well as where urban and wilderness meet. The proposal envisions a series of four zones that reinforce these identities, celebrating the site’s rich history while introducing modern infrastructure and sustainable interventions.
“The proposed sunken forecourt and performance stage that faces the iconic facade of the TPRS building was innovatively designed and had an impressive civic quality. The sense of enclosure creates a dramatic entry into the building and enhances the forecourt as a multifunctional community space for gatherings and performances. The main uses proposed within the site were community-centric and the concept of a ‘0km hub’ effectively conveyed the sense of history and importance of the building as the starting point of the former railway line.”– Jury comments
Well done to the PTW New York team for the collaborative efforts to present such a well-considered design and many thanks to URA for creating this opportunity for us to propose a scheme to re-purpose the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (TPRS) as a unique heritage and recreational node along the Rail Corridor.
