Newcastle Mater Hospital PPP Project

The redevelopment of Health Services for the Newcastle Mater Hospital is NSW’s first Public Private Partnership between Health Administration Corporation and the Novacare Consortium. PTW Architects working association with Suters Architects were the primary consultants for the design, documentation and construction inspection services for these redevelopment works.

The first stage of the new hospital incorporated three 30 bed wards (surgical, medical and oncology), the interventional suite (operating suites and day procedures) the medical centre and medical day unit, and along with back of house services (catering, linen, engineering, mortuary, supply and waste departments).

Radiotherapy services were upgraded. There are three additional radiotherapy bunkers and linear accelerators, and new brachy therapy facilities along with patient care and office facilities.

Newcastle Mater Hospital Redevelopment The second stage included the emergency and ICU departments, medical records, imaging departments, nuclear medicine and office accommodation for hospital administration, allied health and corporate services.

The PTW team was able to rework the concept design of the winning PPP design to create spaces which contributed to both the architectural quality of the hospital and to its social and economic success. A two storey central hall/spine/atrium along which the main public interfaces occur (including the now very profitable café) was introduced as part of the design development. Hospital functions continued to operate during the redevelopment.

The 96 bed Mental Health facility comprises Psychiatric Emergency Care, Psychiatric Intensive Care, three 22 bed Inpatient Units, one 12 bed Unit, one 10 bed Unit with associated shared areas and administration.
