Coffs Harbour Justice Precinct

Commissioned in 2010, PTW Architects undertook the master planning and concept design of Coffs Harbour Government Services Precinct. In 2012 the office building was placed on hold and the place became known as the Justice Precinct.

The Coffs Harbour Justice Precinct is located on a former NSW Forestry site on the northern edge of the Coffs Harbour CBD.

The precinct includes:

  • Police Station - Full local area command facility with forensic services
  • Courthouse - Two local courts, two jury courts and a multipurpose courtroom with associated support facilities and custody areas
  • Site works – Verdant forecourt, kiosk and shared central plant

The courthouse design evolved in response to:

  • Its pre-eminent role and responsibility to express the civic qualities of the precinct
  • The potential symbolism inherent in all elements of the built environment of the court house which is grounded in the fact that court processes and rituals are conceived to take place in the presence of the public
  • The specific operational relationships of the courts in synergy with the rapid rate of change in technologies and processes which contrasts with reverence for the traditions of law
