Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre project involved the conversion of a 1928 ‘atmospheric cinema’ to a 2000 seat lyric theatre.

The lavishly decorated 1928 interiors were conserved and integrated with the contemporary servicing and comfort requirements of a first class lyric theatre. The addition of a new stage tower, orchestra pit, dressing rooms, ‘green room’, rehearsal rooms, additional lobbies and bars brought facilities to a level unequalled in commercial theatres in Australia. All the services were incorporated in a manner consistent with the heritage constraints of this culturally significant building.

Since opening in 1995, the Capitol Theatre made a significant contribution to the cultural life of Sydney, staging performances of ballet, drama, popular musicals and opera.
